  1. If the correct specifications, engineering standards and installation methodologies were consistently followed by the FNOs, the number of fibre cuts could be reduced significantly potentially to near zero in many scenarios.

A figure of 5,000 fibre cuts in H1 2026 should prompt serious consideration of the underlying causes, rather than simply treating the incidents as unavoidable operational events.
From an infrastructure and operations perspective, there appears to be a significant gap in route management, construction supervision, wayleave coordination, protection of existing infrastructure and overall network governance, particularly within the Lagos region.

Fibre infrastructure requires disciplined planning, accurate route records, proper depth and protection specifications, effective stakeholder coordination and strong field-level management.
The industry should be asking a more fundamental question: are we managing and protecting the infrastructure to the standard required, or are we simply becoming better at repairing it?

The cost of repeated fibre cuts extends far beyond the physical repair it impacts network availability, customers, SLAs, operational expenditure and ultimately the credibility of the infrastructure provider.
